G2 English Paper 1: writing (situational & continuous)

Paper 1 is the writing paper — 70 marks, 35% of G2 English, 1 hour 50 minutes. Three parts: a short editing task, situational writing from a visual stimulus, and a continuous-writing composition chosen from four topic types.

Editing (10 marks)

A prose text of about 250 words with one grammatical error on each of the middle lines — grammar only, no spelling or punctuation. (This is the key contrast with G3, which uses an 8-errors-plus-2-correct format.) Read each line for a single, fixable grammar slip — tense, agreement, articles, prepositions are the usual families.

Situational Writing (30 marks)

Write 180–250 words in a given form (email, letter, report, speech) from a visual stimulus, for a stated purpose and audience. There are four content points to cover, plus the right tone. Marks split Task Fulfilment (/10) and Language (/20). LearnUp's PITCH framework structures the form, points and tone.

Continuous Writing (30 marks)

Choose one of four topics, 250–400 words, spanning narrative, descriptive, discursive and argumentative. Signature stems include “Describe the sights and sounds of…” (descriptive), “Write about a time when…” (narrative) and a quotation with “How far do you agree?” (argumentative). The same Language ladder (/20) grades situational and continuous writing; Content is /10.

How to score Paper 1

Clean grammar for editing, all four content points covered in the right register for situational, and a well-shaped composition with varied, mostly-accurate language (the Band-5 descriptor).
