PSLE English Paper 2: every question type

Paper 2 is the biggest paper — 95 marks, 1 hour 50 minutes — covering language use and comprehension. It comes in two booklets: Booklet A is multiple-choice; Booklet B is open-ended, ending with a comprehension passage answered in the child's own words.

Booklet A (multiple-choice)

Booklet A tests grammar, vocabulary, a vocabulary cloze, and a visual-text section by multiple choice. It rewards a broad, accurate command of English — knowing which word or form fits — built up over years of reading rather than crammed. Careful elimination of wrong options is the technique here.

Booklet B (open-ended)

Booklet B is where most of the writing happens: a grammar cloze, editing (for spelling and grammar — note PSLE editing covers spelling too, unlike secondary), a comprehension cloze, synthesis and transformation (rewriting sentences while keeping the meaning), and a comprehension passage answered in the child's own words.

The open-ended comprehension

The final comprehension is often where marks are won or lost. It rewards answering in your own words, drawing inferences (the “why” and “how” questions), and supporting answers from the text. How to score Paper 2

Because Paper 2 spans so many skills, steady all-round practice beats last-minute cramming: a grammar and vocabulary base for Booklet A, sentence-pattern drills for synthesis, and inference practice for comprehension. Watch the clock — leave enough time for the open-ended comprehension at the end.
