PSLE English Oral: reading aloud + stimulus conversation
Paper 4 is the oral exam — 30 marks. It has two parts: reading aloud a short passage (10 marks) and a stimulus-based conversation (20 marks) where the child responds to a visual and talks about related ideas. Oral is often under-practised at home, yet very winnable with preparation.
Key facts
| Paper | 4 (Oral) |
| Marks | 30 |
| Reading Aloud | 10 marks |
| Stimulus Conversation | 20 marks |
Reading Aloud (10 marks)
The child reads a short passage aloud, judged on pronunciation, pace, and expression — pausing at full stops, lifting the voice for questions, and reading at a steady, clear pace rather than rushing. A brief preparation time lets the child scan for tricky words. Smooth recovery from a stumble matters more than perfection.
Stimulus-based Conversation (20 marks)
The larger component: the child looks at a visual stimulus and answers questions, first about the picture and then about related personal experiences and ideas. Examiners reward developed answers — a point, a reason, an example — and genuine engagement, rather than short, one-line replies.
How to prepare for the oral
Practise reading aloud daily, focusing on clear sentence endings and expression. For the conversation, rehearse talking around everyday topics and turning a picture into points (what's happening, why, how it connects to the child's own life). Recording and playing back builds confidence. With consistent out-loud practice, oral is among the most reliable places to gain marks.
