After AEIS: school posting explained

Uplift. Upskill. Upgrade.
A guide from the LearnUp teaching practice, on BrainBuzz.

AEIS doesn't work like a school application where you pick a school and get in. Successful candidates are posted by the Ministry of Education to a school with vacancies at the right level — so the result is partly about your performance and partly about availability.

How posting works

If a candidate is successful, MOE posts them to a school that has a vacancy at the appropriate level and is within reach. Families generally don't choose the school, and the posted school may not be the nearest or a first preference — placement is constrained by where vacancies exist that year.

Why a good result may still mean limited choice

Because posting depends on vacancies, even a strong performance doesn't guarantee a particular school. Some levels and areas have more spaces than others. It helps to set expectations early: the goal of AEIS is securing a place in the national school system, with the specific school determined by availability.

If there's no offer

Not every candidate is placed in a given round. Options include sitting the supplementary exercise (S-AEIS) held early the following year, considering the next cycle, or other schooling routes in the meantime. A near-miss is often a language gap that targeted preparation can close before the next attempt.

Plan with current MOE information

Posting rules, timelines and eligibility are set by MOE and can change between cycles, so confirm the current details on the official website or with the school. Knowing how posting works in advance helps families make calm, informed decisions when results arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How does school posting after AEIS work?

Successful candidates are posted by MOE to a school with vacancies at the appropriate level — families generally don't choose the specific school.

Does a good AEIS result guarantee my first-choice school?

No — placement depends on where vacancies exist, so even a strong result may mean a limited choice of school.

What if my child isn't offered a place?

Options include the supplementary exercise (S-AEIS) early the following year, the next cycle, or other routes meanwhile; targeted English work can close a near-miss gap.

Where do I confirm AEIS posting rules?

On the official MOE website or with the school — rules, timelines and eligibility are set per cycle and can change.
