G1 English: the two cloze tasks explained

A distinctive feature of G1 English is its two cloze tasks, in Paper 2 (Language Use & Comprehension). One is a vocabulary cloze where you choose words from a list; the other is a grammar cloze you complete in your own words. Together they're worth 20 marks — and G1 has no summary.

Cloze I: vocabulary from a list

You're given a passage with gaps and a list of fifteen words, from which you choose the ten that fit. The skill is reading each sentence for meaning and matching the word whose sense and grammar fit the gap — and remembering that five words are distractors you won't use. A working vocabulary, built over time, is what carries this task.

Cloze II: grammar in your own words

The second cloze gives a passage with gaps you fill in your own words, testing grammar — articles, prepositions, verb forms, connectors. There's no word list here, so it's closer to writing than to selecting. A solid grammar base (the same base that serves the editing task) is the key.

How to score the cloze tasks

For Cloze I, read the whole sentence before choosing, and cross off words as you use them so the distractors stand out. For Cloze II, check that your word fits both the meaning and the grammar of the sentence, and watch the small words — articles and prepositions — that carry many of the marks.
