All about G3 Chemistry (K324)
G3 Chemistry (syllabus K324) is the SEC Pure Chemistry exam, first sat in 2027, replacing the older 6092 code. It has three compulsory papers worth 160 marks in total — a multiple-choice paper, a structured and free-response paper, and a practical — covering 12 topics across three sections.

| Total marks | 160 |
| Practical exam | Yes — Paper 3 (20%) |
What G3 Chemistry is
G3 Pure Chemistry follows the SEAB / Cambridge syllabus coded K324 — the new Singapore-Cambridge SEC Pure Chemistry, first examined in 2027. It replaces the older 6092 code. The three-paper structure and weighting are near-identical to 6092, so the change is more about a few content shifts than a wholesale redesign.
The three papers
| Paper | Format | Marks | Weight | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 40 compulsory MCQs (Periodic Table provided; no negative marking) | 40 | 30% | 1h |
| Paper 2 | Section A structured (70) incl. a data-based question; Section B (10, answer 1 of 2) | 80 | 50% | 1h 45m |
| Paper 3 | Practical — Planning, Manipulation/Observation, Presentation, Analysis | 40 | 20% | 1h 50m |
On the theory papers, roughly 45% of marks test knowledge with understanding and 55% test handling information and solving problems — so rote recall alone caps a grade.
The 12 topics, in three sections
Section I — Matter, Structures and Properties: (1) Experimental Chemistry, (2) Particulate Nature of Matter, (3) Chemical Bonding and Structure.Section II — Chemical Reactions: (4) Chemical Calculations, (5) Acid-Base Chemistry, (6) Qualitative Analysis, (7) Redox Chemistry, (8) Patterns in the Periodic Table, (9) Chemical Energetics, (10) Rate of Reactions.Section III — Chemistry in a Sustainable World: (11) Organic Chemistry, (12) Maintaining Air Quality. Sustainability is now a core section heading, not optional context. What's new compared with 6092
Three changes matter most. First, Section A of Paper 2 must now end with a data-based question worth 8–12 marks — interpreting or evaluating a stem of information. Second, sustainability (air quality, pollution, greenhouse gases) is elevated to its own section. Third, the practical paper's skill areas are explicitly tagged — Planning (15%) and the combined Manipulation, Presentation and Analysis skills (85%).
Several 6092 topics are also explicitly out of scope in K324: Le Chatelier's Principle, the gas laws, calculating pH from H⁺ concentration, s/p/d/f orbital classification, and drawing ionic lattices or the diamond/graphite structures. Old prelim papers written under 6092 may include these — they should not be used as-is.
Conventions students must follow
K324 penalises sloppy presentation. Sulfur is spelt with an f throughout (sulfate, sulfite). dm³ is preferred over litre, and one mole of gas occupies 24 dm³ at room temperature and pressure — the only gas-volume assumption needed. Full structural formulae must show every atom and bond (condensed forms like –CO₂H are not accepted). Significant figures and units are marked, so calculation answers must carry the right precision.
How to prepare for G3 Chemistry
Because more than half the marks test application, the goal is fluency, not memorisation: reading command words precisely (“state” vs “explain” vs “predict”), practising the new data-based question, and rehearsing practical skills — titration accuracy, qualitative-analysis tests, and clear presentation of results. Frequently asked questions
Is K324 the same as O-Level Chemistry (6092)?
K324 replaces 6092 from 2027. The three-paper structure and weighting are near-identical, but K324 adds a required data-based question, elevates sustainability to its own section, and narrows a few topics out of scope.
How many papers and marks is G3 Chemistry?
Three compulsory papers totalling 160 marks: Paper 1 MCQ (40, 30%), Paper 2 structured and free-response (80, 50%), and Paper 3 practical (40, 20%).
What is NOT in the K324 syllabus?
Out of scope: Le Chatelier's Principle, the gas laws, calculating pH from H⁺ concentration, s/p/d/f orbital classification, and drawing ionic lattices or diamond/graphite structures.
Is there a practical exam?
Yes — Paper 3 is a hands-on practical worth 40 marks (20%), assessing planning, manipulation and observation, presentation of data, and analysis.
