PSLE English Paper 1: situational + continuous writing

Paper 1 is the writing paper — 55 marks, 1 hour 10 minutes. It has two parts: a short situational-writing task worth 15 marks, and the continuous-writing composition worth 40 — the single biggest component, and where strong writers pull ahead.

Situational Writing (15 marks)

A short, practical text — an email, letter or message — shaped by a purpose, an audience and a format. The child reads a prompt (and often a visual) and writes to a specific reader for a specific reason. Marks reward covering the required points, the right format and tone, and clear, accurate language. It's quick to write but easy to under-do by missing a required detail.

Continuous Writing (40 marks)

The composition: a longer piece, usually narrative, written to a topic and a set of three pictures (the child chooses how to use them). At 40 marks it's the heart of Paper 1, and it rewards a story with a clear shape, vivid description and controlled language — not just events in order. Where children gain — and lose — marks

Gains come from a planned story with a turning point and showing rather than telling; losses come from rambling plots, flat description (“very sad”, “nice”), and careless grammar. In situational writing, the avoidable loss is missing a required content point. Planning for two minutes before writing prevents most of these.
