PSLE editing: spotting errors fast

LearnUp
Uplift. Upskill. Upgrade.
A guide from the LearnUp teaching practice, on BrainBuzz.

PSLE editing gives a short passage containing grammar and spelling errors to find and correct. Unlike secondary editing, which is grammar only, PSLE includes spelling — so the skill is a systematic eye that catches both kinds fast.

Two kinds of error

PSLE editing tests both grammar (tense, agreement, prepositions, articles) and spelling. Knowing both are in play changes how you read: you're scanning for a word that's wrong in form and for a word that's misspelt. A passage usually has a set number of errors to find, so a missed one is a lost mark.

The error types that recur

Common grammar errors: wrong tense, subject–verb disagreement, the wrong preposition, a missing or wrong article. Common spelling traps: doubled letters (“occured” → “occurred”), -ie-/-ei- words, silent letters, and confusable homophones (their/there, its/it's). Knowing the usual suspects makes them jump out.

A checking routine

Read the passage line by line, slowly enough to hear each word, marking anything that feels off. Then re-read each correction inside its sentence to confirm it works. Finally, count your corrections against the number expected — if you're short, a careful second pass on the trickier lines usually finds the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Does PSLE editing test spelling?

Yes — unlike secondary editing (grammar only), PSLE editing covers both grammar and spelling.

What errors are most common?

Grammar: wrong tense, subject–verb disagreement, wrong preposition or article. Spelling: doubled letters, -ie-/-ei- words, and confusable homophones.

How do I find errors quickly?

Read line by line slowly enough to hear each word, mark anything that feels off, then re-check each correction in its sentence.

What if I can't find all the errors?

Count your corrections against the number expected and do a careful second pass on the trickier lines.
