PSLE English AL scoring: how Achievement Levels work

PSLE English isn't reported as a raw mark but as an Achievement Level (AL) from AL1 to AL8, with AL1 the highest. Each of the four PSLE subjects gets an AL, and the four add up to a total PSLE Score from 4 to 32 — where 4 is the best.

What an Achievement Level is

Rather than ranking children finely against each other, the AL system reports each subject in one of eight bands. A child's mark across the four English papers (out of 200) is converted to an AL from AL1 (highest) to AL8. The level reflects what the child has achieved against the curriculum, regardless of how the cohort did.

How English fits the overall score

Each of the four PSLE subjects — English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue — gets its own AL. These four ALs are added together to give the total PSLE Score, which ranges from 4 (four AL1s) to 32. So a strong English AL directly lowers (improves) the total score, since lower is better.

Why the system works this way

The AL bands are intentionally wide so that small mark differences don't create big ranking gaps at a young age. The aim is to reduce the pressure of chasing every last mark and to recognise solid achievement. For parents, the practical takeaway is that consistent, broad competence across the papers matters more than a single standout score.
