Read the whole sentence first
Before choosing, read the full sentence so you know the meaning the blank needs. Many options will be the right part of speech but the wrong sense; the answer is the one that fits the precise meaning of the sentence, not just any word that sounds plausible.
Mind collocation
Words travel in expected company — “heavy rain” not “strong rain”, “make a decision” not “do a decision”. These pairings (collocations) often decide the answer. A child with a wide reading habit recognises them by ear; everyone else can build the most common ones into their word bank.
Build vocabulary the right way
Vocabulary that sticks comes from reading widely and noting new words in context, not from memorising long lists in isolation. Keep a small notebook of useful words with the sentence you met them in, and revisit it. Over months this quietly lifts cloze, comprehension and composition together.
