What is General Paper, and why it matters

General Paper (GP) is the one subject every Junior College student takes, regardless of stream. Sat at H1 level, it tests how well you reason, argue and write about the world — through an essay paper and a comprehension paper — and it counts towards your university admission score.

What GP actually tests

GP isn't a content subject you memorise — it tests thinking and communication: building a reasoned argument, weighing different views, using relevant examples, and writing clear, accurate English. The subject matter ranges across science and technology, politics and society, the economy, the media and the arts, the environment and more.

Why GP matters

Because every JC student sits it, GP is a common yardstick — and it counts towards the University Admission Score, so a weak GP grade can pull down an otherwise strong combination. How to get better at GP
